We all know that bacteria forms on our hands and frequent washing and cleaning of our hands is recommended. Doctors are required to wash their hands in between patients and often we see wall mounted dispensers available in or just outside of patient rooms to facilitate the sanitizing process. A simple push on the lever, and a unit of cleaner is dispensed and there is no need for added towels. Sounds great, doesn’t it? And of course, look at all the chemically derived hand sanitizers out there, available to the general population.

The concern here is facing the possibility and probability that certain strains of bacteria will become immune to this cleaning process when one cleans their hands in this manner on a frequent basis. These products contain chemicals.

Non-chemical cleaners based from essential oils, such as lavender or tea tree oil can safely and effectively sanitize without the possibility of developing strains of bacteria that may become immune to the cleaning process.

Essential oils come from a variety of places, and depending upon the time of day, ground, and location, the properties of these essential oils are constantly changing. As a result of varying properties, it is just about impossible to develop strains of bacteria that become immune to the cleaners.

In addition to having properties that vary, essential oil based cleaners are known to be aromatherapeutic. Subtle fragrances can enhance mood and awaken the senses.

You might want to think twice before you select your choice of a hand sanitizer, and consider a natural option rather than applying chemicals to your skin.

Yoga is a perfect way to increase your overall fitness and general wellbeing. More than 12 million Americans practice at least one form or another of yoga on a regular basis. With so many health benefits it is no wonder that that number grows every year.

We all know that living a healthy and active life is the best way to live a longer and more enjoyable life. This means that whether you are 18 or 80 the chances are pretty good that there is a yoga class for you. Also, it seems like everyone either practices or knows someone who practices yoga regularly, so it follows that there are yoga studios everywhere now. That means finding a class that is right for your needs shouldn’t be too tough to find.

Once you find a class that fits your preferences, keep in mind that you will need a few things. Having your own mat is a good place to start your practice.

There are benefits to having your own yoga mat:

1) Your mat is your foundation. You will stand on it, move on it and sit on it. You connect to your mat, in the same way you connect to your clothing. Your mat will very likely become an extension of yourself as you practice. Move your body and generate your own sweat, on your own mat!

2) Having your own mat helps to make the experience more personal. Yoga mats are available in many colors and even shapes. Some mats have beautiful designs. Find a mat that reflects your personality and mood.

3) Yoga mats are available in super light and very portable options. This means that you can travel easily with it and comfortably practice what you learned in class while you are at home or away on vacation.

The other must-have item is a safe and natural cleaner for healthy and green living. Using your yoga mat just once is enough for it to collect sweat and bacteria from you and who knows what from the surface you place it on. BalanceHome offers natural and non-toxic options to keep your mat clean. Tea Tree oil and Lemongrass is an invigorating option that doesn’t leave a sticky residue. Lavender is a calming option that will leave your mat clean and ready for meditation.

Namaste

Practicing yoga is an excellent way to increase flexibility, strength and mental focus. The poses of Hatha yoga focus on the physical development of the body in preparation of long periods of meditation. Yoga also promotes an overall way of living healthy both in and out of the home. In order to effectively prepare yourself for your yoga session there are a few things you need to get started:

Studio: You should take your time and shop around for the right studio, instructor and style of yoga. Remember, there are many different philosophies and approaches to those philosophies. You may want to start with a visit to yoga studios that are walking or biking distance from where you live. Find a studio that resonates with you, and if you are fortunate enough to find a close one, you might be inclined to practice more often. You may also want to think about finding a studio close to where you work.

Clothes: We all want to look our best especially when we are out in public. Just keep in mind that when choosing your shirt and pants 2 factors should drive your decision.

a. Fit: Some of the poses that you will be practicing will require you to bend over at the waist, lay flat on your belly or back or any number of twists and turns. Keep this in mind when you are looking at the neckline of your workout shirt and when selecting a sports bra. Clothes that are comfortable will offer you greater flexibility and freedom when you move.

b. Material: You can go one of two ways with this one. You can opt for the state of the art moisture wicking top and color coordinating yoga pants. The other option is pure cotton. Organic cotton is an environmentally friendly option, but it’s important to consider the intensity of your session when making that decision.

Good News: Yoga is usually practiced with bare feet. That means that you can save money on buying new shoes or a fancy pair of $30 moisture wicking sports socks.

Gear: One of the most important pieces of gear that you will need is your yoga mat. Yoga mats are available in many lengths and colors. Find one that is durable and easy to clean. There are other accessories you may want to incorporate into your practice such as blocks, blankets and straps, however most yoga studios offer these for your use during practice.

Yoga Mat Cleaner: Just as important as your yoga mat is the cleaner you choose to clean it – and yes, you should clean it after each use. Even a little sweat will transfer odor-causing bacteria to your yoga mat. BalanceHome has a great selection of yoga mat cleaners. They are non-toxic and made from natural ingredients. The Tea Tree oil and lemongrass cleaner disinfects and has a revitalizing and clean scent. The lavender essential oil cleans your yoga mat and leaves your mat with a calming fresh scent.

That should be enough to get you well on your way. Namaste
